About infections
Natalia was diagnosed with Malaria and Pneumonia. Severe malaria occurs when infections are complicated by serious organ failures or abnormalities in the patient's blood or metabolism. Pneumonia develops when the defensive mechanisms within the lung become overwhelmed by a pathogen which has been either inhaled or aspirated. It is associated with a high mortality rate and significant morbidity. Severe pneumonia is frequently a multisystem disease and patients will often present with multiple organ failure.

Background
Natalia is a three-year-old girl with a love for dancing and singing. She recently started kindergarten and, according to her mother, is very active in class. They live just a few kilometers from the hospital. Up until recently, Natalia had been in good health. However, this changed dramatically one morning when she was rushed to the hospital after developing a high fever very quickly, accompanied by two episodes of convulsions, which alarmed her mother. Additionally, two days before this incident, Natalia had complained of abdominal pain and had experienced a loss of appetite.
Medical history
While in the ward, Natalia was given: Artesunate 36mg 0hr,12th hr and 24th hr, IV RL 300mls stat, IV Metronidazole 200mg three times a day for 5 days, P.O Loperamide 2mg stat. AL 1 tab twice a day for three days.Syrup PCM 250mg thrice a day for three days. Discharged on Multivitamin Syrup 7.5mls three times a day for 3 days
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences. Pneumonia should be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, pneumonia may lead to the permanent lung damage, respiratory failure, septicaemia (infection entering blood stream and causing sepsis), pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the space between the lung and chest wall, which can make breathing difficult), and other life-threatening complications.
