Fidel was diagnosed with Rhinitis and Pneumonia. Rhinitis is an inflammation of the epithelial lining of the nose. The condition is accompanied by swelling of the mucous membrane and abundant liquid discharge. The patient's nasal breathing becomes difficult, and the sense of smell becomes worse. Pneumonia develops when the defensive mechanisms within the lung become overwhelmed by a pathogen which has been either inhaled or aspirated. It is associated with a high mortality rate and significant morbidity. Severe pneumonia is frequently a multisystem disease and patients will often present with multiple organ failure.

Background
Fidel is a cheerful baby from a financially challenged family. Over the past three days, he has been dealing with a runny nose and a stubborn cough. Nasal congestion makes breastfeeding uncomfortable for Fidel. Additionally, he experiences frequent bouts of coughing, sometimes followed by vomiting. These symptoms have been occurring alongside intermittent fever episodes.
Medical history
The child came in with flu symptoms and had been coughing for the past three days. He also experienced chest discomfort and a loss of appetite. After receiving treatment, he was discharged with a five-day prescription of antibiotics and painkillers. A follow-up phone call confirmed that he is recovering well.
Prognosis
Rhinitis is an irritation that can spread onto the eyes (conjunctivitis), cause severe inflammation of the sinuses, frequent headaches, and poor sleep quality due to breathing difficulties. Pneumonia should be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, pneumonia may lead to the permanent lung damage, respiratory failure, septicaemia (infection entering blood stream and causing sepsis), pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the space between the lung and chest wall, which can make breathing difficult), and other life-threatening complications.
