Tamara was diagnosed with an Upper respiratory tract infection, and Malaria. Upper Respiratory Tract Infections primarily affect the upper part of the respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, and sometimes the sinuses and ears. Common URTIs include: Common cold, leading to symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and sometimes a low-grade fever. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinus cavities, often associated with nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, and thick nasal discharge. Pharyngitis (sore throat), or otitis media: an ear infection that can cause ear pain, fluid drainage from the ear, and hearing problems. Malaria is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female mosquitoes. The infection causes recurrent cycles of symptoms, including high fever, chills, fatigue, and, in severe cases, organ damage or failure.This stage of the disease is defined by the evidence of vital organ dysfunction.

Background
Tamara, a 10-year-old girl, resides with her mother. She takes pleasure in cooking and delights in seeing others enjoy the meals she prepares. During her free time, she enjoys dancing with her friends. Tamara aspires to become a teacher in the future. However, Tamara's routine was disrupted when she fell ill two days ago. She began experiencing throbbing headaches accompanied by fever, nausea, and vomiting whenever she tried to eat. Additionally, she developed a productive cough.
Medical history
Tamara progressed well to treatment and was discharged After diagnosis, she was put on the appropriate treatment for malaria and was also given some medication to stop the vomiting. The vomiting had been so severe and Tamara was unable to retain any food or drinks taken orally, but after the medication, the vomiting stopped and soon, with the anti-malarial medication that was given, Tamara was up on her feet again.
Prognosis
If an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is not treated, it can weaken the immune system and the body's natural defenses. This can make it easier for other infections, such as bacterial sinusitis or ear infections, to develop as secondary complications. If the URTI is caused by a contagious virus (e.g., the common cold or influenza), untreated individuals can continue to spread the infection to others, potentially leading to outbreaks in close-contact settings like schools or workplaces. Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences.
