Upon evaluation, Chisom was diagnosed with Primary Congenital Glaucoma and Cataract, compounded by background Sickle Cell Disease. Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions characterized by damage to the optic nerve, usually due to increased pressure within the eye. Symptoms of primary congenital glaucoma may include excessive tearing, sensitivity to light (photophobia), enlargement of the eye (buphthalmos), cloudiness of the cornea, and vision loss. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, which is normally clear. This clouding can cause vision impairment ranging from mild blurriness to complete vision loss if left untreated.

Background
Chisom Obiozor, an 11-year-old junior secondary school student, exudes joy and vitality despite facing visual impairment. Her dream is to become a gynecologist, but her current challenge is her impaired vision. She hopes to receive assistance to restore her sight, enabling her to pursue her academic aspirations. Chisom's vision problems began shortly after birth, with a diagnosis of glaucoma and the development of a secondary cataract a few years ago. Presently, she has no vision in her right eye and reduced vision in her left.
Medical history
18/09/2025 Chisom had surgeries done under general anesthesia . She had a left eye glaucoma drainage device (GDD) insertion on the 12th of September 2024. Also had a left eye anterior vitrectomy and tube repositioning done on 27th of September 2024 on account of vitreous wick in anterior chamber which is extending to the GDD tube opening in the anterior chamber blocking it, therefore causing an elevated intraocular pressure which also informed the decision to defer cataract surgery then to prevent the risk of the GDD failure. The intraocular pressure has been optimally controlled since the anterior vitrectomy. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/12 as at last visit about a week ago despite presence of immature cataract. The parent has been counselled on the phacoemulsification surgery for the left cataract when the vision is significantly impaired. Chisom has recovered fully, vision relatively stable and has gone back to being the happy child she is with better vision.
Prognosis
To regain her vision, Chisom requires eye surgery. Treatment for primary congenital glaucoma typically involves surgical intervention to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye and reduce intraocular pressure. Treatment for cataracts typically involves surgical removal of the cloudy lens and replacement with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful surgical procedures worldwide, with a high rate of patient satisfaction and improvement in vision.
