Mike is diagnosed with malaria and pneumonia. Malaria is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female mosquitoes. The infection causes recurrent cycles of symptoms, including high fever, chills, fatigue, and, in severe cases, organ damage or failure.This stage of the disease is defined by the evidence of vital organ dysfunction. Pneumonia develops when the defensive mechanisms within the lung become overwhelmed by a pathogen which has been either inhaled or aspirated. It is associated with a high mortality rate and significant morbidity. Severe pneumonia is frequently a multisystem disease and patients will often present with multiple organ failure.

Background
Mike is a 3-year-old boy who lives with his mother and loves playing football with his friends. He dreams of becoming a nurse when he grows up, and his eagerness to complete school, despite barely starting, brings amusement to his mother. Recently, Mike has experienced general body weakness for the past few days, accompanied by vomiting. He had one episode of convulsions, which greatly alarmed his mother and prompted her to rush him to the hospital. The convulsions were associated with a fever. Upon arrival at the hospital, Mike was assessed at the triage area, sent to the laboratory for tests, and then began receiving treatment. His symptoms and convulsions could indicate a febrile seizure, which is common in young children and often associated with a rapid rise in body temperature. However, it is crucial to perform thorough diagnostic tests to rule out other potential causes such as infections or neurological conditions, ensuring he receives appropriate care and management.

Mike having been diagnosed with Severe Malaria /Pneumonia, medications commenced in the ward Injections were given including; IV Artesunate 42mg given at the 0hr,12th hour and 24th hr. She was also given
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences. Pneumonia should be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, pneumonia may lead to the permanent lung damage, respiratory failure, septicaemia (infection entering blood stream and causing sepsis), pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the space between the lung and chest wall, which can make breathing difficult), and other life-threatening complications.
