Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

YOBE STATE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL DAMATURU

Damaturu, Yobe State, 6 Gujba Road, Nigeria

Background

One-year-old Haruna Hussaini lives with his parents but is described as loving to cry when he is crying and loves to play with his siblings. The child was doing well until 2days before the presentation when he started having a fever and cough, a day after, difficulty in breathing set in. The fever is continuous and not associated with convulsions. The cough is non-paroxysmal, non-barky, no post-tussive vomiting. There is no family history of asthma or foreign body aspiration. There is a history of associated loose stool and vomiting. On examination, the patient is in respiratory distress with difficulty in breathing evidenced by intercostal recession and flaring of ala nasi. He is febrile and cyanosed with non-reassuring vital signs. The patient was admitted to the EPU and is awaiting treatment.

Medical history

Haruna was presented to this facility where he was managed as a case of severe bronchopneumonia. He had his complete dosages of IV medications and other supportive care. He responded well to the treatment as the presenting symptoms subsided. He was later discharged home to complete his recovery. Parents expressed their profound gratefulness to the helpster heroes for coming to their aid.

Prognosis

Hospitalization is necessary as indicated by clinical assessment and he will benefit from intranasal oxygen. The patient needs parenteral antibiotics, antipyretics, fluid and electrolyte management as well as nutritional rehabilitation. He will fully recover with prompt treatment. However, death is inevitable if the patient is left untreated.
