Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

YOBE STATE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL DAMATURU

Damaturu, Yobe State, 6 Gujba Road, Nigeria

Background

Hauwa’s life changed forever in March 2020 when she lost her mother during childbirth. Now under the care of her uncle, this bright 5-year-old dreams of becoming a teacher - just as her mother wished. She loves dancing and cultural performances, but her future is at risk because of a painful medical condition that has kept her out of school. Since she was just 18 months old, Hauwa has suffered from a femoral hernia - a painful swelling near her groin. Though it doesn’t stop her from playing, her uncle, misled by traditional healers, believed it was caused by an "evil spirit" linked to her mother’s death. Because of this, she hasn’t been enrolled in school, robbing her of an education and a chance at a better life. Doctors have confirmed that surgery can fix Hauwa’s hernia, allowing her to live pain-free and finally start school. Her father has promised to enroll her immediately after treatment-but her uncle cannot afford the medical care she desperately needs.

Medical history

Hauwa had successful herniorrhaphy: no surgical site infection and no other complications. She was placed on post-operative antibiotics - IV Flagyl, IV Ciprofloxacin for 72 hours in addition to analgesics and intravenous fluids. She commenced early ambulation and oral sip. She was later discharged home with oral medicines as the recovery advanced. A 1-week follow-up appointment was given to her.

Prognosis

Pelvic ultrasound scan, full blood count, urinalysis, Hb genotype. Group and cross-match 500mls of blood for scheduled surgery. Complete cure is assured after surgery. A corrective procedure would be performed to maintain the shape and function of her vagina. If left untreated, it may cause obstructed hernia and damage to the intestine, which may cause death from severe infection.
