Pneumonia develops when the defensive mechanisms within the lung become overwhelmed by a pathogen which has been either inhaled or aspirated. It is associated with a high mortality rate and significant morbidity in children less than 5 years of age. Severe pneumonia is frequently a multisystem disease and patients will often present with multiple organ failure. Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite. The parasite is spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes

Background
James is an energetic and passionate young boy who loves playing soccer with his friends every chance he gets. He dreams of becoming a professional footballer, inspired by his favorite players and his love for the game. James is determined and hardworking, always practicing to improve his skills. He is also very friendly. James enjoys eating and it was a concern when he lost appetite. This was preceded by a running nose and a cough which was quite persistent. Symptoms had lasted for almost a week and he had begun complaining of chest pain which the mother attributed to the persistent cough. He was also having general body malaise.
Medical history
James arrived at the hospital with symptoms of fever, a runny nose, restlessness, and a persistent cough accompanied by chest congestion, occasional breathing difficulties, and chest pain. Following a thorough evaluation, he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia with bronchoconstriction and malaria. These conditions primarily affect the respiratory system, compromising the patient’s ability to breathe properly. As a result, immediate medical intervention was initiated to manage severe pneumonia (an infection causing inflammation of the lung tissues) and allergic rhinitis. James was treated with artesunate, amoxiclav, Lonart DS, cetirizine, and salbutamol syrup following nebulization, which helped clear his airways. Upon returning for a follow-up three days after discharge, it was confirmed that he had significantly improved and was recovering well.
Prognosis
Pneumonia should be treated with antibiotics (drug of choice is penicillins). If left untreated, pneumonia may cause life threatening complications such as permanent lung damage, respiratory failure, septicaemia (infection entering blood stream and causing sepsis), pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the space between the lung and chest wall, which can make breathing difficult), and other life-threatening complications. If diagnosed early and promptly treated the prognosis is always good and within a short period of time. This also helps in improving the quality of life Malaria can cause severe health problems such as seizures, brain damage, trouble breathing, organ failure and death.
