Background
Brandon is a 1 year 6 month old boy who lives with his mother. According to his mother, it is quite easy to notice when Brandon is unwell since he suddenly gets a very dull mood; when fine and healthy, he is jovial, playful and always smiling. Brandon had 2 episodes of convulsions due to a high fever. He had only been unwell for 2 days and his mother did not know that the condition could worsen so fast. She rushed him to the hospital where he was immediately attended to by the healthcare professionals.
Medical history
Brandon had 2 episodes of convulsions due to a high fever. He had only been unwell for 2 days and his mother did not know that the condition could worsen so fast. She rushed him to the hospital where he was immediately attended to by the healthcare professionals. Brandon was diagnosed with severe malaria and was given intravenous medication for that. He was also given some medication to stop the convulsions and to prevent any further convulsions He was discharged to go home while in a fair state. A review, 3 days after discharge, confirmed that he was well
Prognosis
Severe Malaria is caused by the parasites, not by a virus or by a type of bacterium. If it isn't treated, malaria can cause severe health problems such as seizures, brain damage, trouble breathing, organ failure and death.
