Falmata Umar, 18 years old, lived a fulfilling life in Maiduguri, finding joy in her role as a housewife and her passion for knitting traditional Hausa caps. With skilled hands and a heart full of love, Falmata would weave intricate patterns into each cap, a craft she had learned from her own mother. The Family loves to sit together under the starry sky, sharing laughter and dreams for the future. She was apparently well, but she developed a persistent fever that refused to break, accompanied by a throbbing headache. As days passed, a tingling sensation crept into her hands and feet, unsettling and persistent. The most alarming symptom, however, was the foul-smelling vaginal discharge that left Falmata feeling ashamed and worried about her health. Concerned for her well-being, Ibrahim, her loving husband, insisted she visit the local clinic. This did not stop until she was referred to Nakowa, where she was examined and diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), Malaria, Enteric fever, Hypocalcemia, and Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (P.I.D).

Falmata faced multiple health challenges UTI, malaria with enteric fever, hypocalcemia, and P.I.D. That left her family feeling overwhelmed and scared. Despite the complexity of her illness, she received careful treatment and support thanks to the Helpster charity. Slowly but surely, Falmata grew stronger. Her family’s gratitude is immeasurable, as the charity’s kindness gave their daughter a fighting chance and renewed hope for the future.

If left untreated, urinary tract infection (UTI) can progress to more serious kidney infections, potentially leading to permanent kidney damage or even sepsis if bacteria enter the bloodstream. Malaria combined with enteric fever can cause severe complications such as dehydration, organ failure (especially liver and kidneys), and in severe cases, death. Hypocalcemia, if not promptly corrected, can lead to muscle spasms, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmias due to impaired nerve and muscle function. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) left untreated can result in chronic pelvic pain, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and an increased risk of miscarriage or preterm birth in pregnant women, as well as the potential spread of infection to other reproductive organs and the bloodstream, leading to life-threatening sepsis. Immediate medical attention and appropriate treatment are crucial to prevent these conditions from progressing to such severe outcomes.
