Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About blood

A patient with sickle cell disease who contracts malaria can develop severe anemia due to the destruction of red blood cells, bone marrow suppression, and increased inflammation. This combination can lead to increased risk of complications, higher morbidity, and mortality. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin, jaundice, and dark urine. Treatment involves antimalarial medications, blood transfusions, supportive care, and management of sickle cell disease complications, with prompt medical attention crucial for improving outcomes.

YOBE STATE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL DAMATURU

Damaturu, Yobe State, 6 Gujba Road, Nigeria

Background

Bukar is a 4-year-old cheerful boy, who likes playing football. He presented to the hospital with history of weakness, shortness of breath, fever, jaundice, and in sickle cell crisis. On evaluation and investigations, he was diagnosed with severe anemia secondary to malaria and sickle cell disease. He requires urgent admission, blood transfusion, malaria treatment, among others.

Medical history

Bukar is a known Sickle Cell patient who was admitted in our facility and managed as a case of severe anaemia secondary to malaria. He received his full dosages of antimalarial and other medications. He also had blood transfusion done to correct the anemia. As the treatment progressed he responded very well evidenced by resolving of the presenting symptoms. He was later discharged home on oral medications to complete his recovery. Parents were so happy for the help from helpster.

Prognosis

The doctor's prognosis indicates that with prompt and effective treatment, the child can recover from the malaria infection and severe anemia, and their quality of life can significantly improve. However, if left untreated, the condition may lead to life-threatening complications, increased frequency of sickle cell crises, and long-term damage to vital organs. Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent further complications and improve outcomes. With proper management, the child can lead a relatively stable life, but ongoing care and monitoring will be necessary to manage their sickle cell disease.
