Low birth weight is defined as a birth weight of 2,500 grams (5.5 pounds) or less. This can be caused by premature birth or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). LBW babies are at a higher risk of various health problems, including mortality, growth retardation, and developmental delays and hypothermia defined as a core body temperature below 36.5°C (97.7°F), is a serious condition that can increase the risk of morbidity and mortality, especially in preterm infants. It's crucial to prevent and manage hypothermia to ensure the well-being of newborns while prematurity also known as preterm birth, refers to a baby being born before 37 weeks of gestation. While a full-term pregnancy is typically around 40 weeks, babies born before 37 weeks are considered premature and may face health challenges.

Background
The child comes from a family of three, where the parents rely on occasional manual work, earning an average of KES 200 per day - barely enough to afford one meal daily. They live in a modest mud-walled house roofed with six iron sheets, located in a semi-swampy rural area. The family uses a shared open pit latrine with neighbors. The baby was admitted to the Newborn Unit (NBU) from the labor ward due to breathing difficulties caused by respiratory distress. The child was born at 30 weeks gestation through spontaneous vaginal delivery and a birth weight of 2190 grams. The admission was necessitated by the fact that the baby was not breathing well and had a low birth weight. The baby has been receiving care in the Newborn Unit for the past three weeks. While the mother is overjoyed that her baby is now doing well, she faced a major challenge in covering the medical expenses. Fortunately, after the hospital's social worker assessed her situation - including a home visit to confirm her financial struggles - she was connected to Helpster Charity for support.
Medical history
Makebe was admitted to the Newborn Unit (NBU) with complications related to prematurity, low birth weight, and respiratory distress syndrome. She was placed on oxygen therapy using nasal prongs to support her breathing and maintain body warmth. IV cannulation was performed, and she was started on a treatment regimen that included 10% dextrose IV fluids, vitamin K, IV Xpen, IV Ceftazidime, and aminophylline (PR). After showing significant improvement, Makebe was discharged into Kangaroo Mother Care for continued monitoring and breastfeeding support. Her mother expressed gratitude for the quality care provided by Bungoma County Referral Hospital with support from Helpster Charity Organization. A follow-up home visit confirmed that Makebe is now healthy and thriving.
Prognosis
Prognosis is good Baby Makebe received excellent care from our dedicated doctors, and had the condition gone untreated, it could have led to a life-threatening outcome.
