Background
Shantel is the youngest child in her family. After separating from Shantel's father, her mother moved back in with her own parents, where she now lives. The parents co-parent, and Shantel's father earns a living by making charcoal for sale if he ever gets a tree to cut. It's quite difficult earning a living since the forestry offices are always doing supervisions to confirm that no one is cutting trees in the neighbourhbood. Shantel is a quiet girl who becomes more talkative around her siblings and dreams of becoming a teacher one day. On the day of the incident, Shantel was staying with her father when he noticed she had a fever. Concerned, he took her to a nearby dispensary. After evaluation, the health workers informed him that her condition was too severe for them to handle and urgently referred her to the county referral hospital. In a state of panic, her father quickly hired a motorbike and rushed Shantel to Siaya County Referral Hospital. Upon arrival, she was immediately admitted to the emergency unit, where doctors began working to stabilize her. It was at this point that her father called her mother and told her that Shantel was fighting for her life.
Medical history
Shanel was brought to the hospital with cmplaints of fever and general body weakness. Tests run revealed that she was suffering from septicemia and severe malaria. These conditions warranted admission and she was promptly admitted. In the ward she stayed for over a week, where she was treated with antibacterials, IV Artesunate among other drugs. Shantel responded well to treatment and could walk along the corrridors and was able to feed well also as compared to when she was first briught in. Shantel was eventually discharged home, a call to her guardian reealed that Shantel was recovered fully and was joyful and playful as before.
Prognosis
The outlook for septicemia (sepsis) depends on the severity and how quickly it is treated. Most people recover from mild sepsis with treatment, but severe sepsis and septic shock can be life-threatening, with mortality rates up to 30-40%. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, including antibiotics and supportive care, are crucial for survival The patient was brought to the facility in time and is to be managed with antibiotics and anti malarials and is expected to make a full recovery
