Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background
Eden, born prematurely with a low birth weight, sustained burns three weeks ago following delivery. Shortly after birth, he was placed in an incubator that malfunctioned due to power fluctuations. A blackout occurred, and when electricity was restored, the power surge appeared to exceed the machine’s initial setting. It was during this time that the attending nurse noticed Eden had suffered burns on his left ear pinna, neck, and shoulders. Since then, the hospital has been closely monitoring and managing his condition. Eden comes from a household of seven. His mother, a Form 3 student at a local school, is currently staying at her maternal home. His grandfather, the family’s primary provider, works manual jobs and earns approximately 2,000 shillings per month—barely enough to afford one meal a day. The power fluctuation was caused by a fault attributed to Kenya Power, the company which transmits, distributes and retails electricity throughout Kenya. The power surge affected critical medical equipment , specifically, the incubator resulting in burn injuries to the child. While there is a formal process for filing claims for reimbursement from Kenya Power, it is important to note that this process is often lengthy, bureaucratic, and uncertain. In most cases, reimbursement may take anywhere from 6 months to over a year, and unfortunately, in some situations, the compensation may never materialize, particularly if the company disputes liability or lacks adequate follow-through. Kenya Power’s reimbursement, if successful, serves more as a refund to the patient's family rather than immediate financial assistance.
