Severe malaria is a life-threatening stage of malaria infection characterized by clinical or laboratory evidence of vital organ dysfunction. It typically arises from infection with Plasmodium falciparum but can less commonly be caused by Plasmodium vivax or Plasmodium knowlesi, especially when treatment for uncomplicated malaria is delayed or inadequate. In young children, severe malaria can develop rapidly.
