Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes
ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness. In Rafsan’s case, his early birth and low weight placed him in a high-risk category. The abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina, if untreated, can lead to retinal detachment and permanent blindness.

Background
Torika Akter is a tiny, three-month-old baby girl born into a family struggling to survive. Her mother, Taslima, is a housewife, and her father is currently in jail in Qatar, leaving her family to rely on her uncle Mahtab’s part-time work earning around BDT 6,000 a month. They live in a small tin house with their maternal grandparents, and their limited income makes it impossible to afford the urgent treatment Torika needs for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Without immediate help, Torika risks losing her sight forever, which would mean a life of darkness and missed childhood dreams. Her family’s hope now rests on the kindness of others to save her future and give her a chance to see the world.
Medical history
Torika Akhter, a 1-month-old infant, required urgent treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes to prevent the risk of permanent vision loss. She was treated with Anti-VEGF injections by Dr. Md Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The procedure was successful, with the abnormal blood vessel growth now under control and the retinal condition showing improvement. With ongoing follow-up care, there is strong hope that Torika will develop clear vision. Heartfelt thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their invaluable support in saving her sight.
Prognosis
The doctor has diagnosed Torika with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a condition that can cause permanent blindness if not treated promptly. She needs anti-VEGF injections to stop the disease from progressing and to save her sight. Early treatment is crucial to give her the best chance of seeing clearly in the future.
