Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About blood

Sickle cell disease (SCD), especially sickle cell anemia (SCA), increases the risk of severe malaria, and malaria can trigger sickle cell crises. While sickle cell trait (SCT) offers some protection against malaria, SCA significantly increases the risk of severe complications and death from malaria.

Background

Nelvin is a bright and ambitious Grade 3 pupil who dreams of one day becoming a doctor. She lives with her single mother, who supports the family by selling vegetables. Nelvin is the second of five children. The family faces significant financial challenges, making it difficult to access regular medical care and attend follow-up appointments. Nelvin lives with sickle cell disease and has been diagnosed with anemia multiple times—more than three. However, due to limited resources, she rarely completes her full course of treatment and often only manages to take medication for about a week before going without for long stretches. Over the past week, she has been experiencing increased dizziness and extreme fatigue, tiring easily even with minimal activity. She frequently suffers from malaria and pneumonia, often falling ill nearly every month, which keeps her in and out of hospital.

Medical history

Nelvin, a known sickle cell anemia patient, was diagnosed with anemia. She received treatment that included antibiotics, rehydration fluids, and medication for sickle cell management. Once her condition stabilized, she was discharged from the hospital to continue treatment at home. On follow-up call from a Helpster volunteer, her mother expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the quality care and support provided by Helpster Charity.

Prognosis

Nelvin was treated and if she could have remain untreated malaria in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) could have lead to severe complications and increased risk of death, particularly in children. While SCD offers some degree of protection against severe malaria, even low-grade infections can trigger severe crises. These crises can result in painful vaso-occlusive episodes, increased anemia, and potentially fatal outcomes.
