Background
Jayden is the eldest of three children, including a set of twins. He lives with his single mother and younger siblings in a one-room semi-permanent house. Their father left the family after the twins were born, and since then, their mother has been the sole provider, relying on low-paying menial jobs to sustain them. Due to financial constraints, Jayden is not enrolled in school. His mother recalls that one Saturday morning, as she was preparing to attend a relative’s funeral, Jayden complained of a headache. She gave him paracetamol to ease the pain and left the children in the care of a neighbor. When she returned in the evening, she was told that Jayden’s condition had not improved, so she administered another dose of paracetamol. The next day, around 11 a.m., Jayden began convulsing. His body was hot, yet his feet felt cold. Alarmed, his mother rushed him to the hospital, leaving the twins with a neighbor. He was received and attended to at the emergency department.
Medical history
Jayden was brought to the hospital with complaints of unresolved headache and convulsion. He was diagnosed with severe malaria, mild anemia and convulsion disorder. He was admitted and received IV Artesunate, among other drugs. He responded well to treatment and was duly discharged on orals. A visit to the family's home confirmed that Jayden was fully recovered and was able to play with neighbors kids.
Prognosis
Severe malaria has a potentially fatal prognosis, particularly if left untreated. However, with prompt and appropriate treatment, the prognosis can improve significantly. Even with treatment, complications and some neurological sequelae can occur. The patient received prompt treatment and is set to make a full recovery
