Dorcas N., 17

Dorcas is a 17-year-old girl currently in Grade 9 at a local day school. She comes from a family of six and dreams of becoming a nurse after completing her education. At school, she enjoys playing legball with her friends. Dorcas lives with her parents and five siblings. Her mother engages in small-scale farming, while her father works as a boda boda rider, and together they earn an estimated monthly income of KSh 3,000. Dorcas is a known sickle cell patient. Over the past three days, she experienced joint pains, chills, headaches, fever, and vomiting. Due to the severity of her symptoms, she was admitted to the hospital for further evaluation and management.

Dorcas, a known sickle cell anemia patient, was experiencing a vaso-occlusive crisis and also had moderate anemia. She received treatment that included antibiotics, rehydration fluids, and medication for sickle cell management. Once her condition stabilized, she was discharged from the hospital to continue treatment at home. During a follow-up call from a Helpster volunteer, her mother expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the quality care and support provided by Helpster Charity. she is doing well

The prognosis will be improved as compared to when she was not on any medication Dorcas will have: - Fewer pain crises and hospitalizations - Reduced risk of stroke and organ damage - Improved hemoglobin levels and oxygen delivery
