Ashley A., 17

Ashley is the eldest of four children and lives with her parents and siblings in a modest two-room mud house. Her parents work as casual laborers, taking up any available menial jobs to support the family. According to her mother, Ashley is a quiet and reserved child, which the family attributes to her communication and hearing difficulties. At one point, Ashley began complaining of stomach pain. Her mother initially gave her some traditional boiled herbs and over-the-counter medication, assuming it was a mild issue. However, when the pain persisted, she took Ashley to a nearby health facility. To their shock, medical tests revealed that Ashley was pregnant. Later, Ashley began experiencing lower back pain and fluctuating body temperatures—feeling hot at times and cold at others. Ashley came to the hospital complaining of headache, back pain, and stomach ache. She was diagnosed with malaria, and being pregnant, she was admitted for proper management. She received a number of drugs like dexamethasone and artesunate. She responded well to treatment and was duly discharged. Her mother reports that Ashley is okay, and is feeding well, taking care of herself and waiting for when her pregnancy will come to term and give birth.
