Umbilical hernia is a swelling that can be seen at the umbilicus, or the belly button. It occurs when there is a defect and failure to close a part of the abdominal wall at the umbilical region, thus allowing fluid and parts of the intestine to push through the defect. Hernias should be repaired and closed by surgery.

Background
Saidu is a 4-year-old boy from poor family. Who is joyful and likes riding a bicycle and playing with his friends. He dreams to become a lawyer in the future. About 2 years after birth, he developed Umbilical bulge lingering for more than 2 years that failed to reduce. There is usually a localized pain around the Umbilicus with preceding history of vomiting. He was examined and diagnosed with obstructed Umbilical Hernia and was proposed for repair upon approval by Helpster charity.
Medical history
Saidu saidu, a 4-year-old male, presented with a 10-month history of umbilical bulge accompanied by pain. After thorough evaluation and investigation, he was diagnosed with umbilical hernia. He underwent successful hernial repair surgery without immediate complications. Due to the nature of his condition, he was admitted for 3 days for close monitoring and post-operative care. Saleh recovered well and was discharged home after 3 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 week. Currently, he is doing well, has fully recovered, and has resumed his regular activities. We appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD Medical team.
Prognosis
Without intervention, the hernia may continue to grow in size, causing increased discomfort, pain, and a noticeable bulge at the umbilicus. In severe cases, the protruding tissue can become trapped or strangulated, which is a medical emergency. Strangulation occurs when the blood supply to the herniated tissue is compromised, leading to severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and possible tissue damage or necrosis. Prompt surgical repair is typically recommended for umbilical hernias to prevent these complications and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected individual.
