Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

YOBE STATE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL DAMATURU
Damaturu, Yobe State, 6 Gujba Road, Nigeria
Background
Bello is a calm child who is very attached to his mother and always helps her at home after coming back from school. His dream is to become a soldier. Bello presented with a 3-day history of frequent loose stools, abdominal cramps and vomiting. His parents also reported a decline in urine output and signs of dehydration. A week after the diarrhea, he sustained trauma, not sure the nature. On presentation at the hospital, he was evaluated and diagnosis with Acute Diarrhea Disease.
Medical history
Bello was admitted in our facility where he was managed as a case of Acute Diarrhoeal Disease. He was adequately re-hydrated and had adequate nutrient supplementation. He responded well as diarrhoea stopped and othersymptoms subsided. He was later discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of his condition to continue with his follow-up.
Prognosis
With fluid and electrolyte replacement, supplements administration and good dietary management, acute Diarrhoeal disease has a very good outcome when treated in time. When left untreated, it has the tendency for rapid progression into complications like severe dehydration, electrolyte depletion, acute kidney injury etc which can subsequently lead to mortality when not attended to.
