Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

Cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye, which causes blurry vision and can make it difficult to see clearly. If not treated, cataracts can lead to complete blindness, making it impossible for a person to see anything. This can severely affect daily life, independence, and quality of life, and in some cases, blindness may become permanent if not treated in time. Congenital cataract is a serious eye condition that affects the lens of the eye from birth. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent blindness, especially during the early developmental years when vision is crucial for brain and cognitive growth.

Background

In a small tin-roofed house in rural Shahrasti, 2-year-old Mariam lives with congenital cataracts in both eyes, which significantly limit her vision. Her father, Sujan, works as a day laborer earning about BDT 8,000 per month, supporting a large family of nine members. Mariam is a quiet and gentle child who enjoys playing with her dolls, but her condition is delaying her development and ability to interact with her surroundings. She urgently needs cataract surgery to restore her eyesight, but the cost of BDT 81,000 is beyond the family’s financial means. Without this treatment, Mariam’s vision loss may become permanent, severely affecting her future learning and growth opportunities.

Medical history

Ms. Mariam, a 4-year-old girl, required treatment due to a cataract in her left eye that was severely affecting her vision. She underwent cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation under general anesthesia, performed by Dr. Md. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant of the Hospital. The surgery was successful, and her visual acuity has improved significantly. She can now see clearly with her left eye. Heartfelt thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their generous support in restoring Mariam’s sight.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Chief Consultant at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital in Chandpur, Mariam needs immediate cataract surgery under general anesthesia, followed by implantation of secondary intraocular lenses in both eyes. The doctor has expressed confidence that, with prompt treatment, Mariam can regain functional vision and begin to lead a normal life—playing, learning, and interacting with the world around her. He also warned that if the surgery is delayed, her condition could become permanent, leading to lifelong blindness and a very limited future. With the right medical intervention now, Mariam has every chance to grow up healthy and independent. We sincerely appeal to Helpster Charity to support Mariam’s urgent treatment, so she too can have the gift of sight and a future full of hope.
