Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness.

Background

Nusaifa Akter, a fragile one-month-old born prematurely, is fighting a critical battle for her eyesight in a humble home in rural Sakhipur. Her family’s meager income of just BDT 8,000, earned by her father’s day labor and occasional carpentry, barely covers daily survival, leaving no room for expensive medical care. Despite her tiny size, Nusaifa has shown incredible strength, enduring convulsions and a prolonged NICU stay, but now faces the risk of permanent blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity if she doesn’t receive urgent Anti-VEGF treatment. Without this timely intervention, her vision could be lost forever, condemning her to a lifetime of darkness in a world that is already so challenging for her family. Their desperate plea to Helpster Charity reflects not just hope for Nusaifa’s sight, but for her very future.

Medical history

Nusaifa Akter, a 1-month-old baby, urgently needed treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes to protect her vision from serious damage. She was treated with Anti-VEGF injections by Dr. Md Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The treatment was carried out successfully, bringing the abnormal blood vessel growth under control and improving her retinal condition. With close follow-up, there is strong hope that Nusaifa will be able to see clearly as she grows. Sincere thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their generous support in saving her vision.

Prognosis

Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, have carefully assessed Nusaifa’s condition and recommended immediate intervention. According to their prognosis, timely administration of Anti-VEGF injections can effectively control the progression of ROP and preserve her vision. The doctors emphasized that the critical window for treatment is short and that delays can lead to total vision loss. They believe that with proper medical care, Nusaifa can regain normal or near-normal eyesight and grow up to enjoy a fulfilling life, just like any other child. However, if she is left untreated, the damage will be irreversible, and her potential in life will be severely limited.
