Background
Halima is a 4-year-old son of a commercial tricyclist rider presented his child to our health facility. She is a friendly child who likes watching cartoon movies and he aspires to becoming a teacher. Prior Presentation to the hospital was healthy until 3 days ago when he developed fever, vomiting, anorexia and headache. Currently, he is in distress and needs urgent attention. On presentation, Halima was evaluated and diagnosed with Severe Malaria.
Medical history
A 4-year-old patient was admitted with symptoms of fever, vomiting, headache, and general weakness. After examination and investigation, the patient was diagnosed with acute malaria. Treatment started on June 16, 2025, included antimalarial medication, intravenous fluids, multivitamins, and antipyretics. The patient showed significant improvement and was discharged on June 18, 2025, as symptoms subsided. The parent was educated on preventive measures, including the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets and maintaining a clean environment to reduce the risk of malaria.
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences.
