Background
Ibrahim is a 2-year-old child from family of 5, with poor family background. He is the only male child of the family currently squatting with his parents in one single room in his uncle's house around njimtilo. They are internally displaced persons from their community due Boko haram insurgency ravaging their community. He is jovial amongst his peers and likes playing with toy. Prior presentation to this facility, he was doing fine until 10 days ago when he developed fever, headache, anorexia, and fatigue. Currently, he is distress due to several episodes of vomit. On presentation at out clinic, he was evaluated and diagnosed with Severe Malaria.
Medical history
A 2-year-old patient was admitted with symptoms of fever, vomiting, headache, and general weakness. After examination and investigation, the patient was diagnosed with acute malaria. Treatment started on June 16, 2025, included antimalarial medication, intravenous fluids, multivitamins, and antipyretics. The patient showed significant improvement and was discharged on June 18, 2025, as symptoms subsided. The parent was educated on preventive measures, including the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets and maintaining a clean environment to reduce the risk of malaria.
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences.
