Background
Godwin Solomon is an infant, the 6th of six children. He was born 2025. A handsome little boy that is full of life. When he was born, there was an unusual swelling at the back of his head making it impossible to carry him while he is facing up. He was always carried while he was facing down because of the swelling. On presentation at our hospital, he was examined and investigated thoroughly with the diagnosis of Giant Encephalocele. Requires urgent intervention.
Medical history
Godwin Solomon, a 2-week-old male, was referred to our facility with a giant occipital Encephalocele. After a thorough evaluation and series of investigations, he was admitted into the hospital for surgery. He underwent emergency excision and repair of the Encephalocele, surgery went well as there was no immediate complications. Due to the severity of the condition. the child was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit for close monitoring and continued treatment. The patient recovered well and was discharged home after 8 days, with ongoing follow-up care at our neurosurgical clinic for serial head circumference assessments.
Prognosis
The doctor diagnosed Solomon with a ruptured giant Encephalocele, a congenital defect where brain tissue protrudes through the skull. Surgery is required to excise and repair the defect. The prognosis is hopeful, pending successful surgery, with no current hydrocephalus detected.
