Maryam A., 20

Maryam Ali is a 20-year-old widow living with her parents in the Gwange area of Maiduguri. She is the mother of a young boy, whom she loves deeply and works hard to care for. To support him, Maryam engages in petty trading, selling small goods in her community. Though she did not have the opportunity to attend western school, she is committed to learning and attends Islamiyya (Islamic school) classes in the evening. Despite her challenges, Maryam remains strong, devoted to her child, and determined to build a better future. It started when Maryam began feeling weak and unusually tired. She developed a high, persistent fever with chills, headaches, and body aches. At first, she thought it was just stress from her daily hustle, but her condition worsened. She began having stomach pain, nausea, and episodes of diarrhea, which left her even more drained. Her appetite dropped, and she could barely get out of bed. As her symptoms persisted, she sought for medical help. On presentation at our hospital, Maryam was evaluated and diagnosed with Malaria and Enteric Fever.

Maryam Ali was brought to the hospital on 16/06/2025 with complaints of persistent fever, body weakness, and general malaise. Following thorough clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations, she was diagnosed with Malaria with Enteric (Typhoid) Fever. She was promptly commenced on appropriate medical treatment. Antimalarial therapy with Coartem DS was administered to treat malaria, while Ciprofloxacin was prescribed to manage the enteric infection. Paracetamol was given to control fever and body pains, and Astymin capsules were included as supportive therapy to improve appetite, strength, and overall recovery. Relevant laboratory investigations, including Malaria Parasite (MP), PCV, and Widal test, were carried out to confirm the diagnoses and guide effective treatment. Maryam responded well to the treatment, with gradual resolution of fever and significant improvement in her strength and general wellbeing. She was closely monitored throughout the course of care, and follow-up assessment showed stable clinical condition. She subsequently made a good recovery and was discharged in satisfactory health with appropriate medical advice. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, both Malaria and Enteric Fever generally have a good prognosis. Most patients recover fully with the right medications, rest, and supportive care. However, if left untreated or poorly managed, these illnesses can lead to serious complications such as severe anemia, organ damage (in malaria), or intestinal perforation (in enteric fever). Timely medical attention greatly improves the chances of full recovery and reduces the risk of long-term health issues.
