About malaria, enteric fever and ari
Malaria is a parasitic infection transmitted by mosquito bites that causes high fever, chills, fatigue, and body aches. Enteric fever (typhoid) is a bacterial infection caused by contaminated food or water, leading to prolonged fever, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, and weakness. An acute respiratory infection (ARI) affects the nose, throat, and lungs, presenting with cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat, and sometimes a runny nose or chest discomfort.

Background
Zainab Musa is a bright and playful 2-year-old girl who lives with her mother and three siblings. Despite losing her father earlier this year, she finds comfort and joy in playing with her brother and sisters every day. Her mother works hard to provide for them and make sure Zainab and her siblings have a loving and caring home. One afternoon, while playing with her siblings, Zainab became tired and quiet. Her temperature was abnormally high, she refused to eat, and started crying. Later, she complained of stomach pain, developed a cough, and found it hard to breathe. Worried, her mother took her to the hospital, where she was found to have malaria, typhoid, and a chest infection. On presentation at our hospital, he was evaluated and diagnosed with Malaria, Enteric Fever, and Acute Respiratory Tract Infection.
Medical history
Zainab Musa was brought to the hospital on 16/06/2025 with complaints of fever, body weakness, cough, and respiratory discomfort. Following clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations, she was diagnosed with Malaria with Enteric (Typhoid) Fever and Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI). She was promptly commenced on appropriate treatment, which included oral medications such as Erythromycin for bacterial infection, Artemether for malaria, Paracetamol for fever and pain control, Piriton for relief of allergic and respiratory symptoms, and Astymin as a nutritional supplement to aid recovery and improve strength. Relevant laboratory tests, including Malaria Parasite (MP), PCV, and Widal test, were conducted to confirm the diagnoses and guide effective management. Zainab responded well to treatment, with progressive reduction in fever, improvement in breathing, restoration of appetite, and overall clinical stability. She was closely monitored during the course of treatment and showed steady and satisfactory recovery. Follow-up assessment confirmed that her condition had significantly improved, and she was discharged in good health with appropriate medical advice. Prognosis
With prompt and targeted medical intervention, the prognosis for malaria, enteric fever, and acute respiratory infections in pediatric patients is generally favorable. Most cases respond effectively to early initiation of antimalarial and antibacterial therapy, supplemented by meticulous supportive care, with clinical recovery typically observed within 7–14 days. Conversely, delays in diagnosis or initiation of therapy can precipitate serious complications, including dehydration, respiratory compromise, systemic toxicity, or multi‑organ involvement, underscoring the critical importance of early clinical assessment and vigilant monitoring throughout the course of illness.
