Jafar Haruna is a lively 2 years old young boy living with his parents and four siblings in Maiduguri. As the youngest of five children, he brings joy to the household and loves playing with his neighbors every chance he gets. Despite the financial hardships his family faces, his parents always do their best to provide for him and ensure he feels loved and cared for. Jafar’s sickness started one evening while he was playing with his neighbors. He suddenly felt tired and grew warm with a fever that came and went. Later, he developed a cough, a sore throat, and difficulty breathing, and he stopped eating and became weaker. Worried about these signs, his parents took him to Nakowa in search of medical help. On presentation at our hospital, investigations and examinations done confirmed the diagnosis of Malaria and Respiratory Tract Infection.

Jafar Haruna was attended to at the hospital on 16/06/2025 with complaints of fever, cough, weakness, and general ill-health. After proper clinical evaluation, he was diagnosed with Respiratory Tract Infection (RTI) and Malaria. He was promptly registered and commenced on appropriate medical care. Treatment included oral medications such as Amoxiclav, Paracetamol, Vitamin C, and cough syrup to manage infection, fever, pain, and respiratory symptoms. Due to the severity of his condition, injectable medications including Ceftriaxone, Gentamicin, and Artesunate were administered. Necessary supportive care and monitoring were provided throughout his treatment. Relevant laboratory investigations. Full Blood Count (FBC), Malaria Parasite test, Widal test, and Stool M/C/S were conducted to confirm diagnosis and guide management. Jafar responded positively to treatment, with gradual resolution of symptoms. His fever subsided, respiratory symptoms improved, strength returned, and his overall clinical condition stabilized. He was closely monitored and subsequently discharged in good health with follow-up advice. Most children respond well to antimalarial therapy, appropriate antimicrobial treatment, and supportive care, with a full recovery expected within days to a week. However, delayed or inadequate treatment can result in serious complications such as dehydration, respiratory distress, or progression to severe disease, highlighting the importance of prompt medical attention and close monitoring.
