Rael A., 2

Rael is the second-born in a family of eight, living with her maternal grandmother and other relatives in a modest two-roomed house made of mud walls and an iron sheet roof. Her mother does casual jobs to support the family, while her uncle works as a fisherman. Rael’s parents separated when she was just five months old, with her father choosing not to be involved due to her health condition. She began falling ill at five months of age and was diagnosed with tuberculosis at Bondo Sub-County Hospital. Despite treatment, her condition has shown little improvement. Rael was born underweight at 1.7 kilograms and has experienced recurring health issues, leading to frequent hospital visits. Most recently, she presented with high fever, convulsions, body rashes, and a persistent cough. Mother also reported that Rael had lost significant weight. She was referred from Got Agulu Sub-County Hospital, where she had been admitted for two weeks.

Rael was admitted on 13th June and was showing signs of coughing, fever, rashes on the body and also unable to sit. She was admitted at the pediatric ward. Her temperature was 37degrees Celsius, she was given Gentamicin 45mg and paracetamol 5mls and encouraged to expose the baby. She was referred to occupational therapy for review whereby they discovered that she had delayed developmental milestone. She was trained on development milestones such as sitting walking and standing.On Nutritional review she was enrolled on normal hospital diet, special porridge and mother counseled on complementary feeds, healthy eating habits and encouraged to feed the baby with protein rich foods

It is considered as a critical condition due to its impact on physical and mental development, increased vulnerability to infections and potential for long term cognitive and emotional disturbances.
