When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness. In Sakib’s case, prolonged exposure to high-flow oxygen in the NIU, combined with his early birth, led to the abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in both eyes.

Background
Sakib Miah is a tiny, one-month-old baby who was born prematurely and has already faced life-threatening complications. His father, Md Shah Paran, was working in Bahrain as a construction worker but was injured in an accident, leaving him unable to work and earning only small amounts doing odd jobs. His mother, Jannat Akter, stays at home caring for Sakib and his 2-year-old sister in their small tin house, with a monthly income of just BDT 5,000. Sakib has developed Retinopathy of Prematurity, a serious eye condition that could cause permanent blindness if not treated immediately. Without urgent medical help, he risks losing his sight forever, robbing him of the chance to see the world and enjoy a bright future.
Medical history
Sakib Miah, a 1-month-old baby, required urgent treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes to prevent the risk of permanent vision loss. He was treated with Anti-VEGF injections by Dr. Md Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The treatment was effective, successfully controlling the abnormal blood vessel growth and improving the retinal condition. With continued follow-up, there is strong hope that Sakib will develop clear vision. Sincere thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their generous support in saving his eyesight.
Prognosis
According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Sakib’s vision can be saved if he receives the Anti-VEGF injection immediately. This treatment will stop the abnormal blood vessel growth in his eyes and help his retina develop properly. The doctors are optimistic that with timely medical intervention, Sakib will be able to see normally and grow up like any other child. However, they have also warned that any delay in treatment could result in total vision loss—a devastating outcome for such a young and innocent life.
