Darline Lokwang is a 10-month-old baby girl from Napetet, a dry and remote village in Turkana County. She is an only child, being raised by her single mother, a determined woman who sells firewood to provide for her family after being abandoned by her husband during a prolonged drought. Recently, Darline developed a high fever and became weak, refusing to feed and crying softly. With no means of transport, her mother carried her for over 10 kilometers on foot to Lodwar Referral Hospital. There, Darline was diagnosed with severe malaria - a disease common in the area due to stagnant water and poor sanitation during the rainy season. Already malnourished, the malaria further weakened her. She became dehydrated, lethargic, and critically ill, requiring immediate hospital admission and close medical care.

After days of treatment and close monitoring, Darline began to respond to medication. Her fever dropped, and her cry returned, faint but strong. Though she is still recovering, her family continues to struggle with medical costs and food, but they are hopeful. Her mother now dreams of a future where Darline will be healthy, safe—and have a chance to grow up.

Darline’s prognosis is cautiously hopeful. Although she is dealing with both severe malaria and severe malnourishment - two very serious conditions - her chances of recovery are good as long as she receives timely, specialized care.
