Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is a condition characterized by sores or ulcers that develop in the lining of the stomach or duodenum (first part of the small intestine) Peptic ulcers disease should be taken seriously in a patient with sickle cell disease (SCD) because Chronic Anemia & Low Oxygen Delivery: SCD reduces blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity. Ulcers need oxygen to heal—hypoxia slows healing and worsens symptoms. Frequent Use of Painkillers: SCD patients often rely on NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) for pain crises, which can irritate the stomach lining and lead to ulcers.

Background
Gelan is a Form Three student attending a nearby local day school. She lives with her sister, who supports them through a small vegetable-selling business. Their limited income goes toward Gelan’s school fees and providing just one meal a day. Despite these hardships, Gelan remains committed to her education and is actively involved in school, serving as the chairperson of the 4K Club. She hopes to become a teacher in the future. She visited the facility for a follow-up after hearing about a charity organization that supports underprivileged children living with sickle cell disease and frequent health crises. During the visit, she reported feeling unusually fatigued and shared that she recently missed her midterm exams due to extreme tiredness and a severe headache. Gelan has a history of anemia, with a previously recorded hemoglobin level of 5.8 g/dL, but has been unable to afford the proper diet or medications. She also experiences shortness of breath with minimal exertion, epigastric pain, and pain in her lower limbs.
Medical history
Gelan visited the health facility for a follow-up after learning about a charity organization that provides support to underprivileged children living with sickle cell disease and frequent health crises. During her visit, she reported experiencing significant fatigue and mentioned that she had recently missed her midterm exams due to extreme tiredness and a severe headache. Gelan has a known history of anemia, with her last recorded hemoglobin level of 5.8 g/dL, but has struggled to afford the proper diet and medications. She presented with shortness of breath on minimal exertion, epigastric discomfort, and pain in her lower limbs. Gelan was diagnosed with acute chest syndrome in sickle cell disease and was admitted to the hospital to receive free medical care through Helpster Charity Organization. Her treatment included oxygen therapy, pain management, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and chest physiotherapy. Thanks to timely and comprehensive medical care, her breathing and other symptoms improved significantly. She was safely discharged with a follow-up plan in place to help prevent future episodes.
Prognosis
With early diagnosis and proper treatment, ulcers can heal and symptoms improve. Without treatment, the risk of bleeding, perforation, and worsening of sickle cell complications increases significantly. Patient's prognosis is great, but she should avoid using NSAIDs
