Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Muntaha Akter is a joyful and curious 2-year-old girl whose bright smile lights up her small tin house in Chandpur. Recently, she started experiencing swelling and discomfort in her left eye, which has now worsened and threatens her vision. Her father, Hridoy, works as an auto mechanic earning only BDT 6,000 a month, while her mother, Jui, is a young housewife caring for her children, leaving little money for urgent medical care. Without the BDT 22,500 surgery to remove the congenital cyst, Muntaha risks permanent vision loss, which could shatter her dreams of exploring the world and learning someday. Her family, living in poverty with no steady income or land, desperately hopes for help to save her sight and give her a future full of hope and possibility.

Medical history

Muntaha Akter, a 2-year-old girl, needed treatment for a cyst in her left eye that was causing irritation and discomfort, as well as affecting her vision. She underwent a successful excision of the cyst under anesthesia, performed by Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sk, Chief Consultant of the Hospital. The procedure went smoothly, and her recovery has been excellent. Muntaha now feels comfortable, and her visual acuity has improved, allowing her to see clearly again. Special thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their kind support in helping her regain healthy vision.

Prognosis

According to the Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sk, Chief Consultant of the Hospital, the recommended surgical procedure—Incision and Curettage under general anesthesia—has a high success rate and would allow Muntaha’s eye to heal and function normally. With the surgery and a short course of antibiotics, her vision in the left eye can be restored. However, if delayed, the cyst may cause permanent damage to the surrounding eye tissue, resulting in irreversible vision loss.
