Cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye, which causes blurry vision and can make it difficult to see clearly. If not treated, cataracts can lead to complete blindness, making it impossible for a person to see anything. This can severely affect daily life, independence, and quality of life, and in some cases, blindness may become permanent if not treated in time.

Background
Md. Farid is a bright and kind-hearted 14-year-old boy from a poor rural family in Raipur Upazila, Lakshmipur, who dreams of returning to school and playing cricket again. His vision has gradually worsened due to congenital cataracts in both eyes, leaving him unable to see clearly or safely outside, and forcing him to leave school. His father, Md. Nasir, is a fisherman who earns only about BDT 6,000 a month and works occasionally, while his mother, Farida Akhter, works as a housemaid to help make ends meet. The family lives in a small tin house with no land or savings, making it impossible for them to afford the urgent surgery Farid needs. Without treatment, he risks permanent blindness, losing not only his sight but also his childhood dreams and future opportunities.
Medical history
Md Farid, a 14-year-old boy, was suffering from a cataract in his left eye, which caused blurred vision and difficulty in daily activities. To restore his sight, he underwent successful cataract surgery with the implantation of an intraocular lens under general anesthesia, performed by Dr. Md. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant of the Hospital. The surgery was completed smoothly, and his recovery progressed well. Farid’s visual acuity has significantly improved, and he can now see clearly again. Heartfelt thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their generous support in helping him regain his vision.
Prognosis
According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Farid requires Cataract Surgery under General Anesthesia with Intraocular Lens implantation in both eyes—one after the other. The doctors strongly believe that with timely surgery, Farid has a high chance of regaining his vision and living a full, active life. They emphasize that delaying or denying treatment will lead to complete and permanent blindness, closing the door to education, mobility, and a dignified future. The total cost of treatment is BDT 81,000, which Farid’s family cannot afford.
