Malaria, Enteric fever, URTI, Mild Anemia and Diarrheal Disease Malaria is a parasitic infection transmitted by mosquitoes, causing symptoms such as fever, chills, body aches, and weakness. It can be life-threatening in children if not treated promptly. Enteric fever (commonly known as typhoid fever) is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food or water. It presents with high fever, abdominal pain, weakness, and sometimes constipation or diarrhea. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) refers to infections affecting the nose, throat, or sinuses, usually caused by viruses or bacteria. Symptoms include cough, nasal discharge, sore throat, and sometimes fever. Mild anemia is a condition in which the body has a lower than normal number of red blood cells or hemoglobin, often leading to fatigue, pale skin, and reduced energy levels. Diarrheal disease involves frequent, loose, or watery stools, often caused by infections. It can quickly lead to dehydration in children, especially when combined with fever or poor nutrition.

Background
Rabi Abdullahi is a joyful 3 year old girl living with her mother and five siblings in a single room in Maiduguri. Though she never met her father, who passed away before her birth, Rabi fills their home with laughter and light. Her playful nature and bright smile bring comfort to her family, even in the face of hardship. Despite their limited space and resources, Rabi’s presence brings warmth and happiness to everyone around her. Rabi was brought to the hospital by her mother after she developed a high fever and began passing loose, watery stools. Alongside this, she had a persistent runny nose and appeared weak and tired. Her usual playful energy had faded, and she became quiet and withdrawn. Concerned by her worsening condition, her mother sought medical help to ensure Rabi received the care she needed. On presentation at our hospital, Rabi was thoroughly reviewed by the medical doctor and investigations done shows a diagnosis of Malaria, Enteric Fever, Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, Mild Anemia, and Diarrheal Disease.
Medical history
Rabi received timely medical treatment after being taken to the hospital. She was given antimalarial and antibiotic medications, rehydration therapy for the diarrhea, and supportive care to manage her fever, respiratory symptoms, and anemia. With proper nutrition, rest, and close monitoring, her strength gradually returned. Within days, her fever subsided, the diarrhea stopped, and she became active and cheerful again. Her family is deeply grateful to Helpster for covering her medical expenses, making it possible for Rabi to recover and return to her joyful self.
Prognosis
With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the prognosis for malaria, enteric fever, upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), mild anemia, and diarrheal disease in children is generally favorable. Malaria and enteric fever respond well to specific antimicrobial medications when administered promptly. URTIs are often self-limiting but may require supportive care or antibiotics if bacterial. Mild anemia can be corrected with nutritional support and treatment of the underlying cause, while diarrheal disease improves with proper hydration, zinc supplementation, and infection control. However, delayed treatment, especially in young children, can lead to serious complications, making early medical attention and close follow-up essential for full recovery.
