If not treated, cataracts can lead to complete blindness, making it impossible for a person to see anything. This can severely affect daily life, independence, and quality of life, and in some cases, blindness may become permanent if not treated in time.

Background
Hafsa Akter is a bright and cheerful 15-year-old girl whose love for learning is now shadowed by her worsening vision due to congenital cataract. Her father, Md Kabir Khan, a 55-year-old farmer with a heart condition, and her mother, Rowshonara Begum, struggle to make ends meet on their modest monthly income of BDT 8,000. Living in a small tin house with her two older sisters, Hafsa’s family cannot afford the costly surgery needed to save her sight, which is vital for her education and future dreams. Without urgent treatment, Hafsa risks losing her vision permanently, which could end her hopes of continuing school and pursuing a brighter future. Her family is heartbroken and humbly seeks help from Helpster Charity so Hafsa can regain her sight and keep her dreams alive.
Medical history
Hafsa Akter, a 15-year-old girl, required cataract surgery in her left eye as the cataract was significantly reducing her vision and affecting her daily life and studies. The surgery was successfully performed under local anesthesia by Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sk, Chief Consultant of the Hospital, ensuring a safe and comfortable procedure. Throughout the treatment process, Hafsa was carefully monitored by the medical team. She responded well after surgery and experienced a smooth recovery. Her eye discomfort gradually reduced, and her visual acuity improved noticeably. She is now able to see clearly and continue her education without visual difficulty. The successful treatment has brought relief and confidence back to her life. Sincere thanks to Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes for supporting her to regain vision in the operated eye.
Prognosis
According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Hafsa needs immediate cataract surgery under general anesthesia along with an intraocular lens implant to restore her vision. The doctors are confident that, if treated promptly, Hafsa can regain near-normal vision in her left eye and return to school without limitations. However, they warn that if the surgery is delayed, the vision loss may become permanent, and her overall development could be significantly affected.
