Shantel's mother is mentally ill and the child is taken care of by the grandmother. The grandmother says that the child has been irritable for almost one month, crying a lot as she holds the ear. Shantel's grandmother did not have money to take Shantel to the hospital. The condition has worsened four days ago, when the grandmother realized that there was some discharge coming out of the left ear, and the child had fever. For the past four days Shantel has been crying persistently and her grandmother decided to bring the child to hospital.

The condition has worsened four days before Shantel’s coming to the hospital, when the grandmother realized that there was some discharge coming out of the left ear, and the child had fever. The grandmother had been worried that Shantel might lose her sense of hearing. She was treated, and Helpster volunteer did a home visit a week after discharge. The visit confirmed that the child was doing well. Shantel's grandmother herself confirmed to us that her grandchild still has a perfect sense of hearing.

Without intervention, the infection may persist or worsen, causing ongoing pain, discomfort, and hearing loss. In some cases, untreated otitis media can lead to more severe complications, such as the spread of infection to nearby structures like the mastoid bone (mastoiditis) or the development of chronic otitis media, which can lead to long-term hearing problems. In children, chronic ear infections can potentially impact language development and academic performance. Therefore, prompt medical attention and appropriate treatment, often involving antibiotics or surgical interventions, are essential to prevent these complications and ensure optimal ear health.
