Jude M., 10

Jude is a 10-year-old boy, the third of five siblings, and currently in Grade 8 at a rural public school. He lives with his family, where the father is the sole provider through a small second-hand clothes business. The family relies entirely on this income to cover their basic needs. They live in a rented house, share a pit latrine with neighbors, and get their drinking water from a nearby well. Jude has sickle cell anemia and began feeling unwell a day ago, experiencing a painful crisis. Due to limited finances, his father was only able to buy painkillers from a local chemist. Unfortunately, Jude’s condition worsened despite the medication. With no money to access better medical care, the family felt helpless. He was eventually referred to Helpster Charity, where he was assessed and enrolled for support. He is currently experiencing a severe headache.

Jude, a known sickle cell anemia patient, was experiencing a vaso-occlusive crisis and also had moderate anemia. He received treatment that included antibiotics, rehydration fluids, and medication for sickle cell management. Once his condition stabilized, he was discharged from the hospital to continue treatment at home. During a follow-up call from a Helpster volunteer, his mother expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the quality care and support provided by Helpster Charity. Jude is doing well.

If Jude was left untreated, sickle cell painful crises could have lead to severe complications and even death. Vaso-occlusive crises, the most common type of painful crisis, can cause tissue and organ damage due to blocked blood flow and reduced oxygen delivery. Long-term complications include chronic pain, stroke, acute chest syndrome, and organ damage.
