Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About blood

A sickle cell crisis is a sudden episode of severe pain that occurs when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow through small blood vessels, preventing oxygen from reaching tissues. Severe dehydration is a serious concern for individuals with sickle cell anemia as it can exacerbate sickling of red blood cells, leading to painful crises and other complications. Dehydration can cause red blood cells to lose water and become more rigid, increasing the risk of blockages in blood vessels. Maintaining adequate hydration is crucial for managing sickle cell disease.

Background

Abiud is a 15-year-old boy from a modest rural background and the second-born in a family of five children. His father, who works as a casual laborer on nearby farms earning about KSh 3,000 per month, is the sole provider, struggling to cover the family’s basic needs and school fees. A committed and hardworking student at a local day school, Abiud dreams of becoming a doctor in the future. He has been living with sickle cell disease and recently sought care at a health facility during a crisis, presenting with severe pain affecting his lower back, chest, and joints. This was not his first episode, as he had experienced a similar crisis three months earlier. Abiud’s family are already beneficiaries of Helpster Charity, having previously received treatment support for his condition through the organization.

Medical history

Abiud, a known sickle cell anemia patient, was diagnosed with severe dehydration. He received treatment that included antibiotics, rehydration fluids, and medication for sickle cell management. Once his condition stabilized, he was discharged from the hospital to continue treatment at home.During a follow-up call from a Helpster volunteer, his mother expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the quality care and support provided by Helpster Charity.Abiud is doing well now.

Prognosis

Abiud’s prognosis is cautiously optimistic with proper ongoing care. Living with sickle cell disease means he will likely continue to face recurrent painful crises such as the one he recently experienced. However, with consistent medical follow-up, timely treatment during crises, access to essential medications, and lifestyle adjustments (hydration, nutrition, infection prevention), his symptoms can be better managed, reducing the frequency and severity of episodes. Given his strong academic motivation and family’s connection with Helpster Charity for continued support, Abiud has a fair chance of maintaining good quality of life, pursuing his education, and working toward his dream of becoming a doctor.
