Hafsat M., 3

Hafsat is a calm child who always likes to be with her mother. She always tries helping her mother with little house chores. Despite her age she's eager to start school. Hafsat presented with a 3-day history of fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and a characteristic body rashes which started on the face then later spread to other body parts. Parents also noticed her to be having fast breathing. On presentation at our hospital, Hafsat was examined, had some investigations and was diagnosed with Measles complicated with Bronchopneumonia.

Hafsat was brought to our facility with complaints of body rashes which started on the face but progressed to involve the whole body. She was also said to be having fever, runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis and fast breathing which started almost same time with the body rashes. Following proper evaluation, she was diagnosed with Measles complicated by Bronchopneumonia. She had her complete dosages of parenteral Analgesics and Antibiotics. She was also rehydrated with IV fluids. As the treatment progressed, se responded well as evidenced by resolving of her admitting symptoms. She was then discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of her condition.

It is amenable to treatment and has a good prognosis with the appropriate rest and supplementary medication coupled with symptomatic management, measles is cured and the bronchopneumonia is treatable with the appropriate antibiotics and other supplementary treatment protocols. When left untreated, Measles, especially the complicated ones can lead to a sequela and in some cases even fatality.
