Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About digestion system

An umbilical hernia is a bulge or swelling near the belly button (umbilicus) caused by a weakness or opening in the abdominal wall, allowing abdominal contents like fat or intestines to protrude. In some cases the intestine can protrude and becomes obstructed in the defect presenting with vomiting and constipation. In this case, it becomes an emergency condition, which when left untreated can lead to ischemia and necrosis of the obstructed part.

YOBE STATE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL DAMATURU

Damaturu, Yobe State, 6 Gujba Road, Nigeria

Background

Abdullahi is a calm child who doesn't like strangers. He is said to be breastfeeding well. Abdullahi presented with a noticeable swelling around his umbilicus, which has been present since birth. His parents reported that the swelling becomes more prominent when he coughs or cries. On presentation at our hospital, Musa was evaluated an Obstructed Umbilical Hernia.

Medical history

Abdullahi presented with a noticeable swelling around his umbilicus, which has been present since birth and said to become more prominent when he coughs or cries. After proper evaluation at our facility, he was diagnosed with an obstructed umbilical hernia. He had surgery done successfully where the hernia was repaired. His postoperative period was satisfactory. He was later discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of his condition to complete his recovery.

Prognosis

Obstructed hernia is treatable surgically by opening the defect, returning the herniated part and closing the defect. But when obstructed hernias are left untreated, they can further lead to ischemia and necrosis of the obstructed bowel segment.
