About 1. malaria + enteric fever 2. otitis media
Mustapha was diagnosed with a dual infection of malaria and enteric fever, where malaria, caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through mosquito bites, leads to high fever, chills, body weakness, and fatigue, while enteric fever, caused by Salmonella typhi, results in prolonged fever, abdominal discomfort, and general malaise. He was also found to have otitis media, an infection of the middle ear that causes ear pain, irritation, mild hearing difficulty, and sometimes fever. This combination of illnesses left him significantly unwell and in need of prompt medical care.

Background
Mustapha Abubakar is a 9-year-old boy living with his parents and five siblings in Gwange. Despite coming from a poor family, he is always cheerful and full of energy. He loves playing football and dreams of becoming a star player someday. Mustapha began to suffer from high fever, chills, body weakness, and stomach discomfort, along with ear pain, irritation, and mild hearing difficulty. His condition quickly worsened, leaving him very weak, unable to play, and unable to attend school. Seeing him in severe distress, his family rushed him to Nakowa to seek urgent medical help. On presentation at our hospital, and after further clinical evaluation , he was diagnosed with Malaria + Enteric fever and Otitis Media.
Medical history
Mustapha was promptly attended to at Nakowa after presenting with high fever, chills, body weakness, stomach discomfort, and ear pain. He was diagnosed with malaria combined with enteric fever and a middle ear infection. His treatment included Artemeter tablets and intramuscular Artemeter injections to manage malaria, Amoxicillin tablets and Ciprofloxacin ear drops for the enteric and ear infections, and paracetamol, both orally and via injection, to reduce fever and relieve body aches. Piriton was administered to ease respiratory irritation, while Vitamin B Complex and Astymin capsules supported his overall recovery and strengthened his immunity. Over the course of treatment, Mustapha’s fever gradually subsided, his abdominal discomfort lessened, and his ear pain improved significantly. He regained strength, returned to his playful self, and was able to attend school and engage in his usual activities again. Thanks to the timely intervention and support of Helpster Charity, Mustapha made a full recovery, bringing relief and joy to his family.
Prognosis
With timely and appropriate treatment, Mustapha’s prognosis is generally good. Malaria with enteric fever typically responds well to antimalarial and antibiotic therapy, while otitis media usually resolves fully with antibiotics and supportive care. Full recovery can be expected when medications are taken as prescribed. However, delayed or inadequate treatment could lead to complications such as severe anemia, systemic infection, dehydration, or worsening ear infection. Close monitoring and adherence to treatment are essential to ensure complete recovery.
