Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections

Severe pneumonia is a critical lung infection that poses a significant risk to life. It is characterized by the lungs' inability to absorb enough oxygen, leading to symptoms like blue lips and fingertips and mental confusion. Gastritis is the inflammation of the stomach lining. It can be sudden (acute) or long-lasting (chronic) and is often caused by infection (such as Helicobacter pylori), certain medications (like painkillers), alcohol, or stress. It commonly affects pregnant women

Background

Cherop is a 17-year-old girl in Grade 9 at a local day school. She became pregnant while still in school. She comes from a family of six children and lives with her parents and five siblings. Her mother is a small-scale farmer, and her father works as a boda boda rider, together earning about 3,000 shillings per month. Cherop, who enjoys playing legball at school, dreams of becoming a nurse after completing her education. She is currently seven months pregnant. Over the past three days, she developed a cough with chest pain and discomfort in the upper part of her abdomen (especially when eating foods like kales and beans). On examination, she was found to have severe pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital for treatment and further care.

Medical history

Cherop had been unwell for three days before being brought to the hospital. She presented with complaints of epigastric pain and a cough that was accompanied by chest pain. After clinical assessment and investigations, she was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. She was admitted and started on intravenous X-Pen, intravenous Gentamycin, intravenous Dexamethasone, along with other supportive treatments. Over the course of her admission, she responded well to therapy, and her condition gradually stabilized. Once she had fully recovered and was clinically stable, she was discharged home. Five days after discharge, Cherop returned to the hospital for a follow-up review. During this visit, it was confirmed that she had continued to improve and was doing well.

Prognosis

Cherop, who is expectant, was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and gastritis and promptly initiated on appropriate treatment. With continued adherence to the prescribed antibiotics, supportive therapy, and dietary modifications, her outlook is favorable. Improvement in respiratory symptoms is expected within a few days, while gastritis symptoms should gradually resolve with medication and avoidance of irritating foods.
