Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that can occur in premature babies. It causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina, which can lead to swelling, bleeding, and scarring. In severe cases, these blood vessels can pull on the retina, causing it to detach from the back of the eye and potentially leading to permanent vision loss or blindness. This condition is a leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide.

Background

Kaifa Sultana is a one-month-old premature twin from a poor family of seven living in a tiny tin-roofed house in Chandpur, Bangladesh. Her father, a construction laborer, can no longer work regularly after a serious back injury, and her mother cares for the newborn twins and elderly grandparents on an income of just BDT 6,000 a month. Despite her fragile start, Kaifa is a calm and sweet baby who has already endured 14 days in the NICU and now faces Retinopathy of Prematurity in both eyes. Without urgent anti-VEGF treatment, she could lose her sight forever, leaving her in darkness for life. Her family is desperately appealing for support to save their daughter’s vision and give her a future filled with light.

Medical history

Kaifa Sultana, a 1-month-old baby girl, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes — a serious condition that can lead to blindness if left untreated. She received timely treatment with Anti-VEGF injections under the care of Dr. Md Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist of the Hospital. The procedure went smoothly, and the abnormal blood vessel growth is now under control. Her retinal condition has improved significantly, and doctors are optimistic that she will develop good vision as she grows. Sincere thanks to Helpster Charity and the Helpster Heroes for their invaluable support in helping Kaifa regain her sight.

Prognosis

According to the statement of Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, the baby Kaifa needs immediate intravitreal anti-VEGF injections in both eyes, followed by regular follow-up checkups to ensure proper retinal development. The doctors strongly believe that with timely treatment, Kaifa’s vision can be saved, giving her the opportunity to grow up seeing her family, nature, and the colors of life. Without treatment, her chances of developing useful vision are almost none.
