When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Fatima was diagnosed with complicated malaria with enteric fever, a severe mixed infection where malaria caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through mosquito bites leads to high fever, chills, weakness, anemia, and potential organ complications, while enteric fever caused by Salmonella typhi presents with prolonged fever, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and systemic illness. She was also found to have an acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI), which caused persistent cough, catarrh, fever, chest discomfort, and breathing difficulty.

Background
Fatima Usman is a 14 year old girl living with her parents and five siblings in very poor conditions. Life for her family is extremely difficult, as they struggle each day to meet even their basic needs, and survival is never easy. Fatima began to complain of constant cough, high fever, catarrh, and severe body aches that made her too weak to carry on with her daily activities. Her parents, worried and unable to do much, gave her paracetamol at home, but her condition did not improve. Instead, she became very, very sick, restless, and in obvious pain. Seeing her health worsen quickly, the family, despite their poor state, rushed her to Nakowa to seek urgent medical help, desperate to save their daughter. On presentation at our hospital, and after proper clinical evaluation, she was diagnosed with Complicated Malaria + Enteric fever and ARTI
Medical history
Fatima was promptly started on treatment after her condition was assessed. She was given Lonart DS tablets and intramuscular Emal injections to tackle the malaria, alongside Amoxicillin to treat the enteric fever and respiratory infection. Paracetamol, both orally and by injection, was administered to control her persistent fever and body aches, while Piriton tablets helped ease her catarrh and discomfort. Vitamin C was also prescribed to strengthen her immunity and support her recovery. After a few days on treatment, Fatima’s fever began to drop, her cough and catarrh eased, and her strength gradually returned. The abdominal pain lessened, and she was able to eat and rest properly. Her recovery brought great relief to her struggling family, who expressed deep gratitude to Helpster Charity for making her treatment possible.
Prognosis
With early and appropriate treatment, complicated malaria with enteric fever and acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) generally have a good prognosis. Most patients recover fully when given effective antimalarial drugs, antibiotics, respiratory support, and symptomatic care. However, delayed treatment can result in serious complications such as severe anemia, organ failure, intestinal perforation, or pneumonia. Careful monitoring, adherence to medications, and timely follow-up are essential to ensure complete recovery and prevent relapse.
