Background
Lamia Aktar, a 25-year-old housewife, now 38 weeks pregnant with her second child, faces a terrifying emergency. After her water suddenly broke and she experienced decreased fetal movement, an urgent ultrasound revealed oligohydramnios with fetal distress. Her husband, Abu Musa, a carpenter earning a meager 8,000 taka a month, struggles to support their family of five, including their elderly parents and 6-year-old daughter Mahima; the vital C-section she desperately needs is an impossible financial burden. With a previous C-section, delaying this critical surgery risks a life-threatening uterine rupture or the tragic loss of both Lamia and her baby, leaving her family shattered.
Medical history
After experiencing labor pain for over 38 weeks and rupture of membrane for 12 hours and less fetal movement for 10+ hours with previous history of 1 caesarean operation , she arrived at our hospital where doctors performed an ultrasound that revealed amniotic fluid is very low with fetal distress , making vaginal delivery impossible. An emergency cesarean section was promptly arranged, and the procedure was successful, resulting in the birth of a beautiful baby girl. Both the mother and the baby are safe and sound, with no complications arising from the surgery. The patient's family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Helpster Heroes and the hospital for their timely and effective care.
Prognosis
The doctor's prognosis is that an immediate cesarean section is a crucial, life-saving intervention. The patient's history of a previous C-section combined with the current premature rupture of membranes, moderate oligohydramnios, and reduced fetal movement puts both the mother and baby at significant risk. The lack of amniotic fluid can lead to the umbilical cord becoming compressed, which can cut off the baby's oxygen supply and lead to fetal distress, irreversible brain damage, or stillbirth. Without the immediate surgical delivery, the risk of a tragic outcome for the baby is high. The C-section, while a major surgery, offers the best chance to bypass these life-threatening complications and ensure a safe and healthy start to the baby's life.
