Background
At just 19 years old, Surma Akter's first pregnancy has turned into a terrifying race against time. After a normal pregnancy, she is now past her due date with dangerously low amniotic fluid and minimal fetal movement, a diagnosis that requires an immediate, life-saving C-section. Her husband, Kamal Hossain, a daily wage laborer earning just 9,000 taka a month, struggles to feed their family of five, including his elderly parents and young sister, making the cost of this urgent surgery an impossible dream. Without immediate medical help, both Surma and her unborn child face a dire risk of death, a tragedy that would shatter the hopes and dreams of their entire family.
Medical history
After experiencing less fetal movement for over 40 weeks, she arrived at our hospital where doctors performed an ultrasound that revealed the baby was large, with correspondingly severe oligohydro amnions with no labour pain , making vaginal delivery impossible. An emergency cesarean section was promptly arranged, and the procedure was successful, resulting in the birth of a beautiful baby girl. Both the mother and the baby are safe and sound, with no complications arising from the surgery. The patient's family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Helpster Heroes and the hospital for their timely and effective care.
Prognosis
Based on the patient's critical condition, the doctor's prognosis is that an immediate cesarean section is the only viable treatment to ensure the survival and well-being of the baby. The combination of a post-term pregnancy, severe oligohydramnios, reduced fetal movement, and fetal distress indicates that the baby's life is in imminent danger. If left untreated, the umbilical cord could become compressed due to the lack of amniotic fluid, cutting off the oxygen supply and leading to irreversible brain damage, other severe disabilities, or a tragic stillbirth. Therefore, the doctor's recommendation is a life-saving measure that, while surgical, offers the best chance for a healthy outcome for the baby.
