Mohammed Umar is a bright and caring 6 year old boy and the first among four siblings. He lives with his family in a small room and parlor apartment in a poor neighborhood, where life is often challenging. He attends a government school and helps his mother, a hardworking petty trader, by taking care of his younger siblings whenever she’s away. In the evenings, when there are no Islamic classes. He started complaining of abdominal pain, frequent loose stools, fever, and body aches. Soon after, his ear began to ache and discharge fluid, leaving him in tears most nights. His mother tried to comfort him and gave him local remedies, but his condition only worsened. He became weak, restless, and could barely eat. Seeing her child suffer and grow pale, his mother’s heart broke with fear and worry, so she hurriedly took him to Nakowa in seek of medical help. On presentation at our hospital, and after further evaluation , he was diagnosed with Malaria + Enteric fever, Otitis Media and Gastroenteritis.

Mohammed Umar was promptly attended to at Nakowa Specialists Hospital after days of weakness, fever, abdominal pain, and ear discharge had left him restless and in discomfort. Upon evaluation and necessary laboratory investigations, he was placed on a course of treatment that included Syrup Amoxicillin for infection, Artemeter tablets for malaria, Syrup Metronidazole for gastrointestinal infection, and Zinc tablets to help restore his intestinal health. Syrup Vitamin B Complex and Syrup Paracetamol were given to relieve pain, fever, and improve strength, while Ciprofloxacin ear drops were used to clear the ear infection. He also received Emal injection for malaria and paracetamol injection to reduce high fever. With proper adherence to medication, hydration, and rest, Mohammed’s condition gradually improved. His fever subsided, the abdominal pain and diarrhea stopped, and the ear discharge cleared. Within a few days, he regained his appetite, strength, and cheerful spirit, and was able to return home healthy and active again.

With early diagnosis and proper treatment, Mohammed Umar’s condition of Malaria with Enteric Fever, Otitis Media, and Gastroenteritis had a good prognosis. He was placed on appropriate medications and supportive therapy, which helped control his fever, relieve ear pain, and stop the vomiting and diarrhea. With adequate hydration, rest, and nutritional support, his strength gradually returned, and he made a steady recovery. However, without timely medical care, these combined infections could have led to serious complications such as severe dehydration, anemia, or hearing problems. Thankfully, prompt treatment ensured his full recovery and restoration of good health.
